Create an error if alien data types and virtual fields are mixed

It is debatable  whether this functionality can be removed - e.g. it might make sense when reading from an externally sprayed file in a strange format, but if it is required it complicates the disk read activities once they have been refactored.  

This should be introduced as a (deprecated) error that can be downgraded to a warning, and the effect monitored.
